Our Roots

2012

It all started in 2012, when Jasmine who was a senior in high school & Thomas, a freshman in college decided to sell boba out of a swapmeet/farmers market. The whole business was not planned and probably not legal since everything was made at home & packed in a minivan.

“It was just this crazy idea i had. Aside from drinking boba, I have never actually made my own drink. It was a lot of experimenting. I started with $70 in my pocket and got all the stuff I needed (Table, Canopy, Tea, Milk, and Boba) for our very first day. We didn’t have enough money for dispensers so we were actually reusing milk jugs to hold our milk tea and pouring them out when needed. We did so well that we were able to use the money to buy more tables and new dispensers to hold our tea.” -Thomas

2014

It took two years to eventually find a place they can call Home. There first store is nestled in West Covina, CA called BYOB A Boba Company which became one of the best spots to hangout in the area and serving up the best popcorn chicken.

“It was a lot of hard work. In 2013, Jasmine was pregnant with my first son. We were both going to school full time. while selling boba on the weekends. We had to make the tea the night before, wake up at 3am to begin start making boba, pack the van at 4am, and arrive at the swapmeet 5am. Rain or shine we did it every weekend. Party to hardy the night before, we still showed up with our canopy ready to set-up. It was all worth it. Even though I was just selling drinks, I was able to make people smile through it. It didn’t matter who it was, where they were from, or what they believe in. Drinks and food are universal. I decided it was time to find a more permanent home where I can continue to do what I do best. Make people smile with boba. So I started BYOB A Boba Company selling drinks and bridging cultures along the way.It wasn’t the easiest task, because who would lease a commercial space to a 20 year old kid with no credit and limited capital. There was a lot of rejection. But it took a lot of searching and finally found the right spot”

2018

Boba with a love story. Thomas married the love of his life, Jasmine. Together they managed the store full-time, attended college full-time, and raising two beautiful kids. Thomas & Jasmine decided to open a new store, Loose Leaf Boba Company, with an entirely new concept breaking all the rules of what a traditional boba shop should be. Taking away the syrupy slushes, powdery drinks, and non-dairy creamer powdered milk teas. On September 15, 2018, Loose Leaf Boba Company opened its doors in Downtown Long Beach, CA.

“My plate was full. It was something that seemed impossible and deemed for failure from the start. Honestly, there were times when I felt like giving up. But I had to tell myself that it would be all worth it. It was a lot of hustling and grinding. I had to juggle school life, family life, and work life. The only social life I had was social media. A whole lot of sacrifice was needed. Then 2018 was around the corner. We were about to graduate and our first store is now well established. It was time for a new store with an entirely new concept using real ingredients, real tea, and real milk to create culturally unique drinks.”

THE FUTURE - Looking to share our drinks with the world. Sharing culture and bringing people together one cup at a time.
